EX U.S. ATTY APPOINTED TO INVESTIGATE CORRUPTION AND MASSIVE KICKBACKS IN THE WORLD CUP

The Federal International Football Association (FIFRA) has hired former U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia to investigate recent allegations of corruption in world football. Soccer magnate Joao Havelange and his son in law Ricardo Teixiera who used to lead the Brazilian soccer federations received millions of dollars in alleged bribes from a now collapsed sports marketing company, according to court documents revealed today. Teixiera and Havelange got up to $22 million according to the Swiss Federal Court document. Havelanged resigned from the International Olympic Committee in December 2011 ahead of a ruling on whether he took bribes. One of Garcia’s first tasks will be to inspect the Swiss document on World Cup kickbacks and to examine the the behaviors of senior FIFRA officials in the affair. It is unclear as to whether any criminal investigation is ongoing at this time.
