Meningitis death toll now at 11, sick at 119 says CDC

The outbreak of fungal meningitis apparently linked to contaminated steroid injections from the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts has taken the lives of twelve people and sickened 119 according to the Center for Disease Control. Congress is calling for hearings and evidence and more regulatory oversight as the creation and distribution of compound drugs is not overseen by the FDA. All of the patients were thought to be injected with methylprednisolone acetate a steroid drug used for back pain. Investigators are now saying they think it was contaminated with a fungus usually found in lead mold. according to a report in the New York Times, the New England Compounding Center has 49 employees. as many as 13,000 individuals may have received the tainted shots.
