PROBLEMS WITH LAP-BAND WEIGHT LOSS DEVICE LEADS TO GOVERNMENT SUBPOENA OF ALLERGAN

The lap-band weight loss device linked to a high rate of complications and a number of deaths is now the subject of a government investigation and Allergan has received a subpoena issued by the Department of Health and Human Services Inspector General. The Lap-Band, or laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, is a band placed around the upper part of the stomach that creates a small pouch which quickly fills with food. The band causes a person to feel full quickly, which can result in weight loss. However, the Lap-Band is linked to a number of complication including erosion of the band through the stomach wall, the band moving out of position, nausea, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, gastroesophageal reflux disease, abdominal pain and leaking of the gastric band. Recent studies have suggested that 40% of the patients implanted with Allergan’s weight loss device may suffer serious complications and problems following the procedures. In addition, the FDA said recently that many clinics were not fully disclosing the risks associated with the Lap-Band procedures in direct-to-consumer ads.
