Representative Cases - unpaid customs duties on Chinese jewelry

BOSTON- January 29, 2021

Four jewelry importers have agreed to pay more than $1.2 million to settle a whistleblower case alleging that they failed to pay customs duties on jewelry made and imported from Mainland China. The importers, Roman Sunstone LLC, IStar Jewelry LLC, Ansun Inc. and Starkes Gems as well as TSI Accessories Group agreed to pay the moneys to resolve False Claims Act violations.

The whistleblower, a former employee, will receive 17.5 percent of the amount for revealing the information under The False Claims Act. Jeffrey A. Newman, who represents the whistleblower, also represents others involved in tariff evasion regarding products imported from Mainland China and other nations.
