Two physician researchers from Harvard Medical School and Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Jeremy Greene and Aaaron Kesselheim have raised their concern in the New England Journal of Medicine, about the possible manipulation of social media as a marketing tool by drug makers. They suggest that secret conflicts of interest are a major concern–for example financial disclosures should be explicit for providers of social media. They call for the FDA to assure that social media does not become a promotional handmaiden to the drug industry. The Federal Trade Commission would also have jurisdiction to assure fair advertising.
