U.S. will likely intervene in Landis whistleblower suit against Lance Armstrong after confession.

Press reports indicating that Lance Armstrong confessed doping to Oprah Winfrey in an interview to be aired tonight will likely result in the government joining a whistleblower lawsuit filed against Armstrong by Floyd Landis. The lawsuit, filed under the False Claims Act sought to collect sponsorship funds provided Armstrong by the U.S. Postal Service which supported his team for several years. The whistleblower suit depends on establishing that Armstrong and others named misrepresented themselves in the contract they had with the postal service. The lawsuit filed in the Federal District Court in Washington D.C. alleges that Armstrong had length discussions with Landis about doping and admitted he had done so since early in his profession. Landis saw blood infused to Armstrong during the 2002 Tour de France, according to the suit. That contract signed in 2001 was renewed for $32 million according to documents released. If successful in the suit, Landis could collect up to 30% of the funds the government wins. The deadline for government intervention in the suit is January 17, 2013 although it could be litigated privately and the government could join later.
