DARTMOUTH HITCHCOCK TO PAY $2.2 MILLION TO SETTLE WHISTLEBLOWER CASE FOR IMPROPER BILLS TO FED PROGRAMS

The Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center will pay more than $2.2 million to resolve a whistleblower False Claims Act case because it improperly billed several federal healthcare programs. The whistleblower, Thomas Predergast MD, a former physician at the medical center will receive over $335,000. He reported that despite federal guidelines permitting doctors to bill for certain services by resident physicians (three years from med school), those services must be performed while a non-resident physician is present and the medical records must show this. DH’s anesthesiology department and pain clinic as well as the radiology department billed for the resident’s work even when a full feldged doctor was not there.
