METAL-ON METAL HIP REPLACEMENTS LINK TO CANCER SEEN

According to a report by the UK’s Telegraph, a study soon to be presented at the British Hip Society conference will include findings that suggest the metal particles shed by metal-on-metal hip replacements could cause chromosomal changes which may lead to kidney and bladder cancer. The study involved 82 patients, all who received all metal hip implants and 17 of those individuals had genetic damage to their bladders and three were diagnosed with cancer. One in five showed genetic damage. The culprit is thought to be cobalt and chromium which is in the metal hip replacements and is shed into the body when the implant parts rub against each other.
