NEW STUDY: PRILOSEC, PREVACID AND NEXIUM INCREASE HIP FRACTURE RISK

Researchers in Boston have found that the longer a woman uses heartburn drugs including Prilosec, Prevacid and Nexium, the more likely they are to suffer a hip fracture. The study examined data on 80,000 postmenopausal women who took these medications known as proton pump inhibitors (PPI’s). Compared to non users, woman had an overall increase of 35% increased risk of hip fractures. That jumps to 42% if they’ve taken PPI’s for four years and 55% for six to eight years. In May 2010, the FDA warned that there may be an increased risk of bone fractures from PPI heartburn medications.
