Spine surgeon charged with Medicare fraud for unnecessary surgeries

Atiq Durrani MD charged Medicare $11 million for surgical procedures called anterior lumbar fusions from 2010 to 2013 and a detailed review has resulted in charges by the United States that those surgeries were unnecessary for the patients.

The doctor has been charged with healthcare fraud and making false statements following his recent arrest. According to news reports, he has also been named in nearly 150 medical malpractice lawsuits filed by former neck and back patients. His privileges at a major hospital have been taken away.
