A federal False Claims Act lawsuit filed by a whistleblower who was an employee at a plant owned by DuPont, says he saw that the company was leaking “potentially tons” of carcinogenic gas. The plant is located next to a residential neighborhood and primary school.
Jeffrey Simoneaux who worked for 22 years at the sulfuric acid plant in Burnside in the safety and protection department, claims that DuPont owed Uncle Sam $25,000 per day for every day for the five months it violated the Toxic Substances Control Act by leaking sulfur trioxide, a cancer causing gas used in its processes.
He says he warned supervisors and they told him not to report the leaks in writing.
